The Midland Company Names Two Senior Vice Presidents

The Midland Co., a specialty property and casualty insurer and river transportation company based in Cincinnati, OH, has promoted two executives to senior vice president.

Kurt R. Schwamberger has been promoted to senior vice president of The Midland Company. Schwamberger joined the company in September 1996 as president and chief operating officer of American Modern Insurance Group, Inc. (AMIG). AMIG specializes in writing physical damage insurance and related coverages on manufactured housing and also offers other niche market property and casualty insurance products through a variety of distribution channels. Schwamberger will continue to serve AMIG as president and chief operating officer while expanding his leadership role with The Midland Company.

"Kurt has made significant contributions to the continued growth and success of AMIG and Midland," said John W. Hayden, president and chief executive officer. "This promotion recognizes these contributions as well as his overall importance to our team."

Prior to joining Midland, Schwamberger gained extensive experience in the specialty insurance industry as president of the International Personal Lines Division for the American International Group (AIG) in New York. He also spent ten years with Foremost Insurance Company in Grand Rapids, MI. Schwamberger graduated from Central Michigan University.

Paul T. Brizzolara has been promoted to senior vice president and chief legal officer of The Midland Company. Brizzolara previously served as assistant vice president, assistant chief counsel and assistant secretary. He will continue his responsibilities as assistant secretary in his new position.

Brizzolara joined the company in May 1982 as an associate in Midland's legal department. "Paul has a long history of outstanding service with us," said Hayden. "He has played an integral role in helping Midland further its commitment to customers, shareholders and the community. He has earned this very important position on our leadership team."

Brizzolara earned his undergraduate degree from Xavier University and his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

Midland has an established record of growth. The company, with $221 million in shareholders' equity, recently reported that income from continuing operations for its third quarter ended September 30, 1998 rose 19 percent to a record $7.3 million and has posted record results in five of the last six quarters.

Midland is engaged in specialty insurance and transportation operations. The company's wholly owned insurance subsidiary, American Modern Insurance Group, Inc., specializes in writing physical damage insurance and related coverages on manufactured housing and has expanded to other areas of insurance including homeowners, lower valued homes, dwelling fire, mortgage fire, collateral protection, watercraft, long-haul truck, commercial and excess and surplus lines.
