Ronald Thornton Named President Of IMUA

Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA) has elected Ronald (Ron) Thornton as president of IMUA. In his new capacity, Thornton will be responsible for overseeing present Association programs, representing the Association to other member organizations as well as provide support for present and future membership growth.

He replaces James E. Mooney who recently announced his retirement.

"Jim Mooney and his staff have created a firm foundation from which I plan to build as we move IMUA forward into the 21st Century," Thornton said. "The insurance industry has seen a number of critical changes, sparked for the most part by the numerous mergers and consolidations. As a result, a blurring of the inland marine function will play an even more important role as it re-defines itself for the new millennium. I welcome this challenge and look forward to broadening IMUA's base by attracting new and diverse members."

Prior to assuming his position with IMUA, Thornton was executive vice president of MOAC (Marine Office of America Corp.). Throughout his 28-year career with MOAC, he has held a variety of management positions with responsibility for AAMS (All American Marine Slip), underwriting, claims, subrogation, and loss control and engineering. Thornton began his career as a US Merchant Marine Officer for the former States Marine Line.

Thornton is a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy located in Kings Point, NY. He earned his CPCU in 1981. He is a member of numerous industry-related associations including IMUA, where he served as Education Committee Chairman from 1992-1994.
