RISKMASTER Works Hard for this City

This progressive southern city has been RISKMASTER a user for ten years. It's earned a stellar reputation among local public entities and its risk management head has been named Public Risk Manager of the Year by a leading trade association.

The city had evaluated several other RMIS products before selecting RISKMASTER in 1990 after careful consideration. Initially, it had eight terminals that were used to just enter claims data and conduct claims searches to locate associated paper files. Four years later the city purchased the LAN version of RISKMASTER when it upgraded its operating system. Another four years passed before the city migrated from RISKMASTER DOS to RISKMASTER/Win. Today its 20 users process, manage and analyze nearly 10 years of claims data housed in two servers.

Over the years, the city has leveraged more of RISKMASTER's capabilities while serving a growing constituency. Through an inter-local agreement, the city provides risk management services including the responsibility for all of the Workers' Compensation, General Liability and Vehicle Accident claims for the city, the county and the local Board of Education.

Some of the many challenges the city faces in serving these organizations include managing risk at an international airport, a jail, a 1,500-employee police department, an 800-employee fire department and a 100,000-student school system. In total, it is responsible for managing the claims activities of 22,000 employees.

Top 10 RISKMASTER Tasks

Bill Reduction - Before using this feature, the city's Workers' Compensation staff had to manually evaluate each medical invoice, compare it to a book of Industrial Commission rates, and calculate the amount to pay. With RISKMASTER's Bill Review Module, they just enter the invoice details and it is automatically adjusted to the appropriate amount.

Diaries - Its adjusters use RISKMASTER's diaries to track claims that require follow-up. In the past, this was either done manually on desk calendars or not at all.

SORTMASTER Reports - This popular feature lets the city produce a large volume of custom reports for those departments requiring loss and other analytical information. "We let them have it their way," says the risk manager.

Actuarial Reports - RISKMASTER helps the city generate actuarial reports that group losses by fiscal year.

Query Designer - This feature lets the city quickly locate specific claims by location. When the location is the only thing a claimant knows about an accident, this becomes a valuable management tool.

Microsoft Office Integration - This feature automatically merges RISKMASTER contact data into form letters the city creates in Microsoft Word. It also exports loss data into Microsoft Excel to produce spreadsheets for claims analysis.

First Reports of Injury - RISKMASTER prints FROI documents. The city used to type these reports manually.

OSHA Logs - RISKMASTER prints OSHA logs. The city used to type these logs manually.

Check Printing - RISKMASTER promptly prints claims payments as laser checks. The city used to submit check requests to its accounting division, waiting days before getting the checks to send claimants.

Integrated Claims Processing - Nurses enter claim information into RISKMASTER at the County medical clinic when an injured employee seeks medical attention. The new record appears immediately in the city's system for appropriate, timely action.

After nearly 10 years as a RISKMASTER user the city continues to look for and find new ways to automate its risk management work processes with RISKMASTER. "With the proliferation of the Internet and constant technological advancements, we are always under pressure to advance our services through automation of our systems for the good of our customers," says the risk manager.
