This Association of British Insurers is offering Insurance Facts, Figures and Trends, a new annual publication that examines trends from 1995-1999.

The 64-page publication reviews the long term and general insurance sectors, and comments on the prominent role played by insurance companies in the UK economy. Other topics covered include insurance company mergers and acquisitions, population aging and its implications for insurers, and the role of insurers as investors.

Findings include:

  • Continued growth in worldwide premium income for long term insurance—up 89% from 1995 to £106.4 billion.
  • A decline in worldwide general business premium income—down 3% from 1995 to £34.9 billion in 1999.
  • General business underwriting losses in 1999 down nearly 20% from 1998. However, with investment income down 15%, the overall trading profit was just slightly higher at £0.9 billion.
