Prudential P&C Boosts Law Enforcement Verification Access

The Prudential Property and Casualty Insurance Company of New Jersey (PRUPAC-NJ) says it has implemented a service to provide New Jersey's 22,000 law enforcement officers with immediate access to verification records for PRUPAC automobile policyholders.

Prudential's New Jersey Law Enforcement Support Initiative is the first of its kind in the state. Through a dedicated toll-free telephone number, accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, law enforcement officials can immediately determine whether a motorist stopped at the scene of an accident or traffic violation is covered by PRUPAC NJ or one of its New Jersey property and casualty affiliates. The company says no other insurance company in the state offers law enforcement this direct access to coverage records 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"Our new Law Enforcement Support Initiative provides a much-needed service to municipal police officers and state troopers," said Roger Desjadon, president of PRUPAC-NJ. "Drivers who carry counterfeit or expired insurance identification contribute significantly to the cost of fraud in our state. Other motorists and accident victims have little or no chance for compensation from these drivers, and often don't find out until it is too late."

With PRUPAC NJ's new system of direct access, law enforcement officers will immediately know whether a driver's Prudential insurance card is valid. The initiative makes it possible for police officers and state troopers to dial a special code on the 24-hour insurance line, enabling them to immediately verify the authenticity of a driver's insurance coverage. In most cases, the dedicated telephone system can certify coverage within five minutes.

According to Desjadon, the system will tie in with the state's ability to pursue drivers who are using forged or expired documents.

"Early results from the call-in system have brought praise from a number of state and local police officers. We are confident PRUPAC NJ's Law Enforcement Initiative will not only save New Jersey drivers hours and days of confusion in reporting claims against uninsured drivers, but will also save countless dollars in fraud investigations," he said. "It will make it possible for the state to move more quickly in prosecuting motorists who falsely claim to have Prudential coverage."

Representatives from PRUPAC NJ have been providing instructions for using the new direct access system at law enforcement seminars across the state.
