Insurers Hail Pennsylvania Governor's Veto Of Helmet Law Repeal

N/Am Ridge's veto of legislation repealing Pennsylvania's motorcycle helmet law was greeted with strong support by property and casualty insurers.

"While the repeal of this critical safety measure was supported by those claming a victory for personal choice and freedom, the fact is that it would have been a severe blow to the safety of Pennsylvanians," said David Snyder, assistant general counsel for the <%=company%>. "By preventing unnecessary injuries and deaths, helmet laws and other highway safety programs actually enable people to fully exercise their most precious constitutional freedoms."

Snyder added, "The governor's courageous action will save lives, prevent crippling injuries and save Pennsylvania taxpayers, businesses and insurance consumers tens of millions of dollars annually."

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety predicts that repealing the helmet safety law would have caused an estimated 33 more deaths at a cost of nearly $45 million in Pennsylvania every year.

"We hope that the Legislature will not send the governor another repeal bill," Snyder said. "We agree with the governor that while protective eyewear prevents debris from impacting motorcyclists' eyes, helmets protect motorcyclists when they impact concrete and steel."
