Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman and former Republican presidential hopeful Orrin Hatch (Utah) will address 800 independent agents who will be participating in the Independent Insurance Agents of America (IIAA) 2000 National Legislative Conference next month.

The 24th renewal of the highly successful and effective IIAA legislative meeting will be held May 1–3 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in the nation's capital. Hatch joins Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (S.D.) on the conference speakers' list.

Hatch will address the IIAA member agents during a breakfast session on May 2, while Daschle is slated to speak to the agents during a breakfast appearance the next day.

"We are honored to have Chairman Hatch as a speaker for the IIAA National Legislative Conference," says IIAA CEO Paul Equale. "Chairman Hatch is a well-respected leader in the Senate and is regarded as a true statesman on Capitol Hill. There are many politicians in Washington and Congress, but a select few earn the title of statesman. In the case of Chairman Hatch, it is a hard-earned, well-deserved moniker."

Hatch was a political neophyte in 1976 when he launched his political career with a run for a seat in the U.S. Senate. With the backing of then-former California Governor Ronald Reagan (R), Hatch beat his Republican primary opponent and went on to oust three-term incumbent Sen. Frank Moss (D) in the general election.

Hatch is now in his third decade in the Senate after the people of Utah reelected him on three separate occasions. He currently is running for reelection again.

While serving in the Senate, Hatch has been a leader in the fight for tougher anti-crime laws, civil justice reform, and legislation to protect individual property rights. As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Hatch has a direct impact on many issues, including civil justice reform legislation that IIAA supports.

"Chairman Hatch has been a leading advocate of civil justice reform. He understands that the current legal system is stymieing the ability of small business to expand and further develop," says IIAA Executive Vice President Robert Rusbuldt. "IIAA has worked closely with Chairman Hatch on the effort to create a more stable civil justice system that respects the rights of individuals to sue for wrongful acts but also curbs the number of frivolous lawsuits."

As a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination this year, Chairman Hatch was at the epicenter of American politics for several months, meeting with thousands of voters, debating other candidates and helping to set the tone for the Fall elections.

"Chairman Hatch will be able to offer our agents a unique insight into this year's presidential election and the thought process of the American electorate," says Rusbuldt. "We look forward to hearing his thoughts on the coming presidential election and how it will impact the congressional elections as well. Chairman Hatch will provide IIAA member agents an insider's view of the run for the White House between Vice President Al Gore and Texas Governor George W. Bush."

The IIAA National Legislative Conference features include an in-depth legislative issues briefing session, several social/networking opportunities such as the sixth annual IIAA Congressional Reception, appearances by other high-profile political speakers discussing the important insurance and national issues confronting lawmakers and agents in Washington, and hundreds of meetings on Capitol Hill between IIAA's agents and their elected representatives in Congress.
