Case Studies

Utilities Company
A recent software development project at a major southern utilities company involved the expertise of one of UBICS' consultants. Using Oracle 7.3.3 and Delphi, the project team developed a software package that handles all trading operations for the company and performs risk management tasks for trading operations in its entirety.

With this software, client employees have all the business information required for market analyses at their fingertips. Thus, the company's trade representatives are in a better position to make deals that will be profitable for the company - an important factor in an area where a single deal can be worth millions of dollars. The software system not only provides accurate information on all business aspects, but also generates all reports required by both middle and top management. All functions are accomplished through a single system that is highly reliable and efficient.

Insurance Company
Consultants on assignment with a large insurance company are currently working as part of a project team which is completing a $21 million specialties engineering effort to rebuild the firm's billing function into one system in their company/casualty insurance division. In rebuilding the software to support this new billing environment, the team is working on an Oracle 7.2.3 server using batch programs to process information. The application consists of approximately 500 tables, 350 forms, 150 reports and over 80,000 lines of Pro*Cobol.

Once completed, this reengineering endeavor will provide the company with a competitive edge in the marketplace. The newly rebuilt billing application will shift the emphasis to a consumer focus, improving turn-around time in customer service and also providing more information to the customer quickly and in a more concise manner. The company expects this competitive advantage to be the catalyst in increasing business and capturing a greater percentage of market share.

Consumer Products Company
One of UBICS' consultants was part of a team involved with an eight-month project execution with the medical supplies division of a large consumer products company. Analysts and programmers at the company worked to analyze the client's business processes and to suggest possible solutions/explanations for their problems. These explanations, in turn, clarified the client's perceptions concerning the behavior of the ERP software. Simulations were run to recreate the problems and the business reports were customized accordingly.

Due to inadequate analysis of the tables in the software, the pre-existing reports could not fully satisfy the end-user. Hence, these reports were re-analyzed by UBICS consultants (experts in Progress 4GL & RDBMS) and then were reprogrammed. In addition, the consultants customized many reports which were already provided by MFGPRO in order to cater to the client's specific needs.

Through their work at the project site, the project team provided a bridge between the ERP software and the end-users, thus enabling the client to fully exploit the potential of the software and reduce their time to market.
