Allstate Claim Process, Provides Tips For Those Hit By Severe Wind Storms

Allstate's Catastrophe Team provides the following tips for those who have suffered damage:

First, make sure your home is structurally safe. Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage, keeping receipts for materials. Call your insurance company and get advice about what to do next. If your home is uninhabitable, find out what living expenses the company will pay for.

Take an inventory of your possessions and property. If you have a list or videotape that was prepared before the storms, compare the two. Record any damage and document it with photographs or a videotape. If you have canceled checks or receipts that prove the value of damaged items, collect them to give to your insurance company when you file a claim. Give yourself time to add to your list as the days and weeks go by.

Notify creditors if bills have been lost or you're unable to pay. Ask your utility company to stop billing if your home is unlivable or has been destroyed.

File a claim even if you know your policy doesn't cover the specific disaster. Be aware that claims may be settled in the order they're received. Promptness pays.

Assist claims adjusters assigned to your case. Small losses may be settled easily. More extensive claims will take more time. Document your conversations and keep copies of all correspondence.

Find out about any special loans and grants that may be available. Possible sources may include: FEMA, The Small Business Administration (homeowners may qualify), local governments, private lenders and the American Red Cross disaster relief.

Be extremely cautious when hiring contractors. Unscrupulous contractors may take advantage of people who have experienced disasters. Take special care to hire reputable firms. Take your time in choosing and be sure to:

  • Get estimates from several licensed, bonded contractors.
  • Check their credentials with your local Better Business Bureau.
  • Ask your neighbors what they're paying for similar work.
  • Inspect contractors' licenses and proof of liability insurance.
  • Get a contract in writing, and don't pay more than 20 percent upfront.
  • Follow local building codes and inspection procedures.
  • Avoid signing over an insurance settlement check to the contractor.

Work with a qualified tax expert to find out about tax breaks you may be eligible for because of your losses.
