AIMU Recognizes McCarthy for Distinguished Service
The American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU) has awarded its Distinguished Service Award to James McCarthy Jr. The award recognizes individuals whose actions have brought credit to the American marine insurance market.
McCarthy retired from a 35-year career with Chubb & Son in March 1998. He joined Chubb as an underwriting clerk in September 1963 after a four-year stint in the U.S. Marine Corps. After a series of other promotions, he was named an assistant vice president of Chubb & Son and home office senior cargo underwriter in September 1988.
McCarthy continues to serve as a consultant to Chubb's Property, Machinery & Marine Department.
In presenting the award at the organization's annual meeting, AIMU Chairman James Zrebiec said, "If there was ever anyone who went about his work and doing a good job all while avoiding the spotlight it has to be … James M. McCarthy Jr."
Zrebiec recognized McCarthy's many contributions to the marine business, including serving on the underwriting committee of the American Cargo War Risk Exchange and chairing the underwriting committee of the Cargo Reinsurance Association as well as serving on its vessel approval committee.
Also, as a member of AIMU's cargo committee, McCarthy headed the subcommittee that drafted revisions to AIMU's 1966 cargo clauses. "These are currently on the front burner of AIMU's cargo committee," Zrebiec added.
