Hurwitz Group publishes Research Brief on Visibillity
Overview
Much has been made of the great potential for service providers that target promising vertical
opportunities. But outside the healthcare field and such well-established suppliers as TriZetto, not
much momentum has been apparent. One exception to this trend is Visibillity, a Chicago-based solution provider targeting a
source of considerable expense and waste in the insurance industry — namely, managing the litigation process between
property and casualty (P&C) insurers and their outside panel law firms. Historically, litigation management has been a highly
manual, paper-intensive approach prone to error or worse, ranging from over-billing to unnecessarily high indemnity payouts.
Highlights
Visibillity's Litigation Management and Collaboration solution promises to significantly reduce both
legal fees and indemnity costs incurred, while carving out a substantial revenue stream for itself. It does
so by seeking to facilitate direct collaboration between insurance companies and law firms, while supplanting the sometimescontroversial
role of independent auditors.Major functions include collaborative budgeting, multiview electronic invoicing,
document collection and sharing, threaded discussion and matching invoices to statements of work to make sure that billed-for
work has actually been performed.
The Hurwitz Take
Visibillity is an excellent example of a service provider targeting a promising vertical segment. While
the interaction between the P&C insurers and law firms represents an excellent near-term opportunity,
Visibillity's basic collaborative approach could extend well beyond that group to encompass other types of insurers, major
corporations, as well as the interaction between large systems integrators (SIs) and their customers. This latter opportunity is
tantalizing in its possibilities. Many recent startups and established professional services automation (PSA) vendors have sought
to target the interaction between SIs and their customers, but have most often emphasized the procurement process and in
some cases sought to impose their solutions from the supply side. The promise of the Visibillity solution lies in its clear value
proposition from the buyer's perspective, which could resonate strongly with enterprise services buyers.
